Mistakes You Want to Avoid While at The Gym

Is this your first time working out at a commercial fitness center? If so, keep some of these exercises and etiquette tips in mind for an overall better experience.

1. Don’t Get Self Conscious

We often get caught up in our own thoughts while at the gym. Therefore, it’s easy to feel self-conscious and nervous. Especially if it’s your first time working out in a public facility. But, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is worrying about others. Once you realize that everyone is paying attention to their own workout, the nerves should subside, and you’ll be able to work out like a beast!

2. You Don’t Bring Your Own Water

Keeping hydrated during a work out is crucial. Don’t forget to bring a reusable bottle of water. Staying hydrated will help you last longer while running on the treadmill. Yes, gyms have water fountains, but there’s always a chance that it’ll be out of order, so don’t risk it.

3. Always Wipe Down the Machines After Using Them

Make sure to keep a rag or towel in your gym bag so that you can wipe down the machines after every use.

4. Don’t Hog Machines

Try not to spend more than ten to fifteen minutes at a single machine, especially during the gym time rush hour! You can frustrate other gym members, so remember always to be courteous. However, you’re a paying member too! So don’t feel bad about using the machines included in your membership, but if a line starts to form behind you, you should probably speed up your session.

5. Spending Too Much Time at The Gym

Though on paper, this doesn’t sound like a negative thing — you can experience burn out if you start out too intensely. You can split your exercise sessions into two or three 10 minute intervals to experience the same benefits. You’ll be less sore and tired versus working out for the entire hour straight.

6. Not Arriving Prepared

You don’t have to formulate a perfect plan, but it always helps to come to the gym prepared. Otherwise, you might end up walking around aimlessly and unsure. Develop a weekly split while at home. What body part will you work out every different day of the week? Write this down into your phone or planner, and you’ll always be prepared.

6. Not Making Use of All the Amenities

If you’re paying for a luxe gym membership, but not using all of the great benefits that come with it, you may be wasting your money. Take advantage of all the classes your gym offers, like yoga, spin, and pilates. If your gym has a sauna, pool, or basketball court, try those out too. If you notice you’re just hanging around the cardio equipment, you can save money by finding a cheaper gym, or investing in your own gear. You’ll need to visit a specialty fitness store that sells exercise equipment in San Franciso.
